Into Film: Every Child a Filmmaker – Golspie

In late October 2024 I got the chance to deliver Into Film’s Every Child a Filmmaker project in Golspie with the wonderful Hannah Hunter, a fantastic young filmmaker from Kilchoan.
We were very lucky to get to work with S5 and 6 students in the mornings over the course of a school week at Golspie High.
To work with seniors on creative projects is not very common at all, as so often they are focused on preparation for exams. So to have our group for a week was a real luxury.
The first few days were spent exploring the basics of filmmaking and then we started into the world of storytelling, choosing a story to look at and then getting out around the school and filming it.
It was a fascinating process. They really worked hard on developing their skills and finding out how to create atmospheres that told their story effectively. I’m very pleased to say that we ended up with a film that is very much in the young people’s own language, it’s true to their intent and was a lot of fun to make and, indeed, watch.
Every Child a Filmmaker was delivered in partner with Regional Screen Scotland, who run the Screen Machine, where we were able to show Super 8 to our participants before the project started to set a flavour of approaches they may choose to look at in the creation of their own film. The Screen Machine then screened their finished film to local audiences. As ever it was a great pleasure to work with the RSS crew, I find their vital work a sincere inspiration.
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Fair Access team were also a core partner in the project, providing lots of lovely kit to work with. Hannah regularly works with them on community projects, so do keep your eyes peeled for their projects, they’re a great team to work with.
